A TRIBUTE TO OUR FORT

I worked at the Fort from 1984 until 1990. It was the most amazing first-person living history museum ever. I will never forget my time there and what a wonderful place it was to work and to learn.

Last year I made a visit to Ft. Wayne. With some trepidation I took my husband to see the amazing Fort that I have always told him about. The buildings were still there but they didn't seem right. The most important thing was missing. Life. The significance of the Fort wasn't really those buildings. They were replicas. What mattered was a Private making musketballs, a woman doing the laundry, the baker scrubbing the oven and all of the other everyday activities of 1816 that brought the place to life. My friends performed these tasks with care and love each day they crossed the bridge into yesteryear. I will always be grateful to them for giving me something so wonderful to remember. I am sorry for the city of Ft. Wayne that it no longer has such a beautiful symbol of its history for children and others to enjoy.

From a 1986 Ad for Ft. Wayne Convention Center. This appeared in "Air Wisconsin" magazine. (Clockwise - L to R) Wayne, Ross, Jim, Shannon, Bob, & Wendy.

During my time at the Fort I portrayed 4 characters. The longest (3 or 4 seasons - my memory is going) being Harriet Whistler, the eldest unmarried daughter of Major Whistler.
