I recently hit upon an idea for a phone gadget that will really make your life a little easier. Have you ever had a phone call at an inopportune time? Do you have an oddball schedule? Here is my idea (and it belongs to ME, Shannon L. Salisbury, Esq.!): I would create a dial very similar to the dials that one sets to turn lights off/on when going on vacation. I plan on calling it the "Salisbury 2000". This dial is to be attached to the phone in much the same manner as the answering machine (eventually, all answering machines will include this as a feature). This dial can be set to "Acceptable" and "Unacceptable" times for receiving phone calls. This next part requires the help of the phone company (with whom I am currently in negotiations): When the caller tries to phone you at your "Unacceptable" time, he/she receives a recorded message asking whether this call is related to an emergency (Press 1) or not (Press 2). If the caller presses 2, he or she will immediately receive a small electric shock. After all, if this person is your friend or family member, he will know your schedule. If the person becomes wise to the electric shock concept, and presses 1 even though it really is not an emergency, the person receiving the call can press a button on his "Salisbury 2000" which notifies the phone company that the caller is annoying and should be stopped. After 3 calls of this nature have been logged against a person, his phone privileges will be discontinued for 1 month. As you can see, this would put an end to most annoying calls (especially ones from telemarketers) without tying up your phone line. Most importantly, by simply removing the annoyance, the world has become a better place. ** Please call your local phone company and demand the "Salisbury 2000"! **
